Statement:The primary focus of my work is portraiture. The camera grants me permission to investigate stories. My photographs are portraits of my interactions with extraordinary individuals who might otherwise go unnoticed. I am drawn to people who are non-conformists with large personalities. I see a person or space that is vibrant to me and am tempted to investigate. I work to enter the places people live so I can see their possessions, hobbies, partners and pets. I build trusting relationships with people and am welcomed into their private lives, allowing me to photograph their environments and actions without them feeling self-conscious of my flashing camera. As my work continues to evolve, I find myself turning the camera around to include myself in photographs. I feel that this conveys our unique dynamic in a more conspicuous way. | ![]() J.P.'s pool rival, Borrego Springs CA, 2011 |
